Awarding our first research grant to the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla was an exciting and rewarding day for Executive Director, Marilyn Librers. After evaluating several applications for grants the Board of Directors identified research being done by William H. Gerwich of the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine at Scripps and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy. This project has identified a potent new anti-cancer drug isolated from toxic blue-green algae found in the South Pacific. Pauchon Foundation has affectionately named the project “mermaid’s hair” and is delighted to be part of this cutting edge technology. A financial grant in the amount of $5000 has been awarded so they may continue further research.
